Kirtan has the profound ability to invoke a blissful, trance-like state. Most seasoned practitioners agree that the benefits of kirtan cannot be fully captured in words—they must be experienced first-hand. Trying to describe kirtan to someone who hasn’t participated is like trying to explain the taste of a mango to someone who’s never eaten one. You might compare it to a blend of peach, pineapple, and orange, but until someone actually tastes it, they won’t truly know what a mango is like. Similarly, the essence of kirtan can only be understood through direct experience. As Sacinandana Swami beautifully put it:

Different individuals experience kirtan in different ways. Some feel an immediate connection, as if meeting a long-lost friend or returning home. Others may need time to become familiar with its unique rhythm and energy. Kirtan’s raw and unpolished sound may initially feel strange—like an unripe mango, unfamiliar and slowly gets absorbed in the mind.
